The fabric of bricolos

The genius is it soluble in comfort? This is what might suggest the many examples of inventiveness that have been reported outside the OLPC project. Thus, we learn that members of the program OLPC Afghanistan have devised and implemented a prototype of "pedal to XO" responsible for producing the energy needed to operate the computer XO.

This realization, or the device bicycle generator-battery powering an XO, a school in Uruguay (" Transformando mecánica in the energía eléctrica "), inevitably evokes the legendary crank, still associated with the first prototypes of the XO. This accessory was eventually abandoned because of its inadequacy. A pedalo in Afghanistan, a crank in the laboratories of MIT, a micro-turbine in the village Malagasy Antitorona, on the island of Nosy Komba , or solar panels, as in San Mahen , Sierra Leone: these are some some of the ideas more or less successful, we must at OLPC or associated with it.

Clearly, there is ingenuity in these creations. But how many other geniuses anonymous and unsung countries "developing" they contain? For it is understood that the inventiveness is not the prerogative of the XO computer, as illustrated brilliantly the young William Kamkwamba in Malawi, which has designed and built wind turbines in a context of extreme poverty, which the course "typical-atypical" gave rise to the story " The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind ".

Even if there is no strict determinism between the possession or use of technology such as the XO and the educational benefits that can be drawn, it appears that the learning platform was designed to foster creative and critical attitude among its young users.

An educational platform hackable

OLPC has indeed registered the ingenuity among its principles. The ingenuity is that of users of this educational platform designed to be robust, "green" and open. Users are encouraged to compete for intellectual audacity to make the most of their XO and the best use of constraints imposed by the lack of adequate infrastructure and too often most acute deprivation.

Thus different devices and equipment have been designed to accompany the XO computer. We find a listing on the OLPC wiki page devoted to devices , they are intended to power the XO in power or to ensure its connectivity with the rest of the world. Other projects have begun to address these needs with a solution "all in one," as that achieved by the project Labomobile and Green-wifi in Senegal.

Other creations, just as the original, continue to emerge from the inventive minds of their designers, as the robotic 3D printer RepRap . This can be enlisted for the manufacture of another series accessory viewfinder of the camera's XO.

Nothing trivial either, in the project design of an electro-cardiogram (project OLPC Golden State ).

Finally, the day your XO will have to pass on the "pool" after any failure, repair it yourself or have it repaired at a local service center. Join us for this, near Paris, in / tmp / lab .

Too far from home? Never mind, move closer to other Repair Centers , or create one yourself ( How to start a repair center )!

Conclusion

The future belongs to you, simply invent: Happy Hacking!
